A MAN who punched a police officer and threatened paramilitary-style violence has been jailed for eight months.

John Goddard (48) also tried to strike a woman that he encountered sitting on a street in Belfast.

Prosecutors said he resorted in violence during three separate incidents in the city.

Belfast Magistrates Court heard Goddard was arrested on March 9 last year following an altercation outside a Tesco store on Great Victoria Street.

He became aggressive and attempted to head-butt a PSNI officer before being put in a police car.

Police again encountered Goddard in a drunken state at Radnor Street on June 23 this year.

He was holding an open bottle of cider and refused to leave the area.

Goddard took a swing at another man before punching a constable on the head.

In another incident he targeted a woman sitting in Botanic Avenue on August 16 last year.

"The injured party alleged the defendant was verbally abusive and attempted to strike her with a closed fist," the prosecutor added.

Goddard, with an address at The Mount in Belfast, was convicted of assault on police, disorderly behaviour, common assault and breaching an Anti-Social Behaviour Order.

Defence counsel Michael Boyd described his client as an "inveterate alcoholic".

Earlier this year Goddard was jailed for a separate incident where he had a Kinder Egg full of cannabis hidden inside him.

Imposing six months imprisonment for the latest series of offences, Deputy District Judge Liam McStay added a further two months from another previously suspended term.
