A group of west Belfast residents have spoken out to pledge their support for the Casement Park redevelopment project and voice their "opposition" to a recent legal challenge to it.
The residents, who live adjacent to the site on the Andersonstown Road, said they were "dismayed" to learn that Mooreland and Owenvarragh Residents’ Association (MORA) had filed a challenge against the 34,578-seat project, which was granted planning permission by Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon in July.
Legal papers for a judicial review of the minister’s decision have been filed on behalf of MORA.
Yesterday, Donal O'Hara, speaking on behalf of `Concerned Owenvarragh and Mooreland Residents', said some residents "do not agree" with the move and "do not support it".
"It is for these reasons that many concerned residents, who live directly adjacent to the site, have come together to explicitly express our support for the project, our opposition to this legal challenge, and to make our position clear," he said.
"While we want to place on record that we do not agree with or support those that are challenging the minister's decision, as residents and neighbours we do respect their right to do so.
"However, we also recognise the broad community support there is for the project, we welcome the changes that the GAA has made to the stadium’s design and we want to see the redevelopment commencing".
