A Co Mayo family has made the news in the US after they made an international discovery on a local beach.

The McGreal family, who live in the village of Straide, were visiting Mulranny Beach when they came across a rubbish bin, which had had travelled thousands of kilometres from South Carolina.

On investigating the find, the family found information on the side of the barrel which read: `City of Myrtle Beach South Carolina'.

The rubbish bins had reportedly been stored away ahead of a hurricane in the US but the one found in Co Mayo had got away.

Keith McGreal said he was doing some photography on the beach when his son, Ferdia noticed the blue barrel.

Speaking to RTÉ, he said: "When we got there, we could see a label on the outside that said 'trash only' and there was Spanish writing underneath, so I knew it wasn't from the locality.

"We had a more detailed look at the side of the barrel and I said to the kids: 'Wow, do you realise where this has come from'."

Mr McGreal contacted officials at Myrtle Beach, who shared the story online.

He added: "I've been talking to people in South Carolina and they reckon it travelled up the eastern seaboard then across the Gulf Stream before hitting the west coast of Ireland.

"It's only a bin at the end of the day but just to think of the voyage it has taken... was a big moment for us".
