FORMER South Belfast DUP MP Emma Little-Pengelly is resuming her legal career from next week when she returns to the Bar.

Ms Pengelly, who was ousted from her Westminster seat in 2019 by the SDLP's Claire Hanna, had indicated an interest in returning to law earlier this year.

The former DUP special advisor, who also previously served as a South Belfast MLA and junior minister, had previously indicated she planned to travel abroad for volunteering work after Covid travel restrictions were lifted.

Following the vote to instal Edwin Poots as short-lived DUP leader in May, she said in a social media post: "I have decided that it is the right time for me to step back and take some time in pursuit of other interests for the next number of years."

The trained barrister had also indicated returning to the Bar in Northern Ireland, a move confirmed to be taking place next week by her former Westminster colleague Sammy Wilson.

The East Antrim DUP MP tweeted yesterday: "Wishing my friend...well as she prepares to return to The Bar of Northern Ireland on Monday."

Recent speculation indicated Ms Little-Pengelly could make a bid to return to Stormont politics by standing for next year's Assembly election in East Belfast.
