AN inquest into the death of convicted sex offender Liam Adams will be held in October.

The 63-year-old, a brother of former Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, died from pancreatic cancer in February 2019.

Weeks before his death, had been moved from Maghaberry prison to a hospice.

Adams, formerly of Bernagh Drive, west Belfast, was handed a 16-year sentence in 2013 for raping and abusing his daughter Áine between 1977 and 1983 when she was aged from four to nine.

During a preliminary hearing at Belfast Coroner's Court today, a provisional inquest date of October 10 was set.

The inquest, which will be heard by a jury, is scheduled to last for a week.

A further preliminary hearing will be held on February 3 2022 to update the court on various matters, including the disclosure of documents.

A solicitor for the Adams family told the court that they are seeking legal aid and are awaiting to hear if this application will be granted.

Adams' family are also commissioning an independent expert to examine the circumstances of his death ahead of his inquest.

An expert has not yet been appointed, the court heard.
