SOUTH Belfast MP Claire Hanna has told the House of Commons she has received death threats for her stance on the Northern Ireland Protocol.

The SDLP MP said the Protocol - established as part of the UK's withdrawal from the European Union to prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland - had been "spun" by people since it took effect at the start of the year.

The Protocol means the north effectively remains part of the EU's Single Market for goods, and it is opposed by many within unionism for placing a customs border between the north and Great Britain.

"Unfortunately, the protocol has been spun by many, not as a consequence of a series of decisions that the UK made for their own reasons, which is fair enough, they're a sovereign government and they're entitled to do it," Ms Hanna told the House of Commons yesterday.

"But the perception has been given that it was because of Dublin or because of the EU. I know I’ve had police round twice at my door with death threats because people have been told, 'she brought you the protocol' when these are the consequences of the UK’s decisions."
