NEW dugouts belonging to an east Belfast football club have been burned out for the second time in 18 months.

They were destroyed around 6.30am on Saturday.

Bloomfield FC described the attack as "mindless vandalism" and said the dugouts had cost £4,000 and were "purchased with money raised and generously donated by friends within the local game".

Chairman Dee Carroll said the committee met following the incident and had no idea why the club had been targeted.

"We are a community club and we do so much for the area," he said. "Anybody's children can come and play football and be part of something.

"It's mindless. The first time it happened I thought it might have been children, a bit of horseplay, but someone got up early on Saturday morning and came prepared with an accelerant.

"There's an anti-climbing fence about eight feet tall around it, and they got over that."

He said the ground, which is owned by Belfast City Council, needed to be made more secure, including increased us of CCTV cameras.

The club, which has 25 junior teams of girls and boys, and three senior teams, said it will not let the latest attack stop it playing.

"There's not a chance we are going to let this put us off," said Mr Carroll. "If anything, we well get bigger. We are inundated with enquiries with people looking to join.

"We had different councillors down to see us on Saturday and they are trying to sort out meetings. I just hope the council follows through on it."

Police said they believe the fire was started intentionally, and that investigations are ongoing.
