TRAVELLERS from Northern Ireland have been left stranded in Amsterdam after Easyjet cancelled a number of flights.

Some passengers said they were not notified until the last minute about an issue with flights from Schiphol to Belfast, which were cancelled on Friday, Sunday and Monday.

Danielle Hamilton, from Belfast, said she and her partner, Jonathan and her brother, Jordan, who has cystic fibrosis, had been left in a "total nightmare".

The trio had been due to fly home from the Dutch capital on Friday.

Their flight had been due to leave at 5.35pm however there was no information available until 7pm, when it showed on the board that it had been cancelled.

"When we got to the airport it was bedlam," she said.

"But there was no-one from EasyJet at the airport to help, staff were telling us to ring them or go on their app".

Ms Hamilton said the group was eventually told the next available flight would be today however amid fears for her brother's medication, which was running low, they got him booked on an Easyjet flight on Monday which was then also cancelled.

"We have had to pay to get him home on another airline, he has been our priority, getting him home was the most important thing," she said.

"We just do not know what is happening, our stress levels have been through the roof".

Seventeen-year-old Caitlin Lowry, from Bangor, Co Down, has also been left stranded in Amsterdam with her aunt, Natasha and grandmother, Margaret.

"We were due to fly back on Sunday and were half way through security when an email arrived to say there was no flight," she said.

"But there was no one from EasyJet there, no one to talk to. We just sat down and had to think what we were going to do".

The trio, who had to pay for two nights at a hotel, were booked with another airline to arrive home yesterday.

"It has just been horrific, we are all just exhausted and want to get home," she said.

"Anything we have got, hotels etc, we have had to pay for ourselves. It's been hard for all of us, my grandmother and aunt both have health problems".

An EasyJet spokeswoman confirmed flights had been impacted due to "ongoing operating restrictions at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport as a result of strong winds, combined with runway maintenance".

She added: "We advised passengers that anyone who sourced their own hotel accommodation will be reimbursed for any expenses".
