THREE companies are to face prosecution as a result of investigations carried out following the 2018 fire at the Primark store in Belfast city centre.

The move follows the submission of files last year to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) by the Health and Safety Executive.

The regulator made the submission to the PPS last June, almost three years after the blaze that destroyed the clothing store housed in the historic Bank Buildings.

It has been reported that the cause of the blaze is not a part of the prosecutions.

A spokesperson for the PPS said: "The prosecutions are in relation to alleged health and safety failings that were discovered as a result of the investigation by the NI Fire and Rescue Service and the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland following the fire."

They added: "Proceedings will commence in due course."

Work is ongoing to restore the five-story Bank Buildings, which was built in 1900, and before the fire had housed Primark since 1979.
