A WEST Belfast mother who travelled to Mexico for alternative cancer treatment after £50,000 was raised by the community to help her, has died.

Mother-of-two Sharon Rooney-Conley (39) died on Sunday, just hours after celebrating her son's fourth birthday.

The 39-year-old, who was from the Divis area, died 21 months after she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in January 2020 and was given a "poor prognosis".

She had a double mastectomy and was later given the all clear.

In December 2020, the cancer returned and Sharon was given between six months and two years to live.

However, she found a medical centre in Mexico offering an alternative cancer treatment and the community raised the £50,000 needed for the treatment.

Having received positive results following this treatment, Sharon found out in February this year that the cancer had returned.

In April, she married her partner, Stephen, but on returning home from honeymoon in New York, she was told the cancer had progressed.

Sharon died in the Northern Ireland Hospice on Sunday and has been waked this week in her wedding dress.

Speaking to The Irish News, Lisa said the death of her sister had left the family "completely and utterly devastated".

"She was so brave. She was an inspiration and we are really, really proud of her.

"She was a wee warrior".
