A remembrance service will be held in Coleraine to mark the 50th anniversary of a massacre that killed six people and injured 33.

Two bombs were detonated in the PIRA attack close to the centre of the Co Derry town on June 12, 1973, both after a warning but with a wrong location for the one that led to the fatalities.

The service will include the unveiling of a permanent memorial to those who died, Francis Campbell (70), Dinah Campbell (72), Elizabeth Craigmile (76), Nan Davis (60), Robert Scott (72) and Elizabeth Palmer (60).

David Gilmour, who was  injured aged 10 when the bomb went off outside his father’s shop, campaigned for many years for the permanent memorial. He died last year following a battle with cancer aged 59.

Causeway Coast and Glens Council is organising the event and the unveiling of the memorial, which is described as happening “following consultation and engagement with victims’ families and some of those immediately impacted by the bombing”.

Councillor Sean McGlinchey served 18 years after being convicted of murder for his involvement in the bombing that killed the six people. He has apologised and said he would never have taken part if he had known "innocent” people would be killed.

In May 2022, a granite plaque was created by Murdock Memorials, Coleraine, and was integrated onto the pavement at Railway Road, the location of the first bomb that went off at 3pm on June 12, 1973.

A second bomb exploded minutes later at nearby Hanover Place, adding to the panic caused by the first detonation.

Members of the public are invited to attend the 50th anniversary event at 3pm on June 12 at Coleraine Town Hall.
