The funeral will take place on Wednesday of father-of-five Michael Jim Quinn who died following a road accident at Tooban on the main Derry to Buncrana road.
Mr Quinn, who was in his mid-sixties, died at Letterkenny University Hospital on Friday evening after the car he was driving was involved in a single-vehicle crash earlier in the day. A female passenger, who was aged in her early sixties, was uninjured in the accident.
Mr Quinn, who was living at Rossbracken near Letterkenny, was originally from Buncrana. He was well-known in the lower Inishowen area where he was a suicide prevention councillor and was also a regular election worker with Sinn Féin.
Sinn Féin TD, Padraig Mac Lochlann paid tribute.
Mr Mac Lochlann said: “Jim was one of the truly great characters of Donegal and a proud and dedicated Irish republican like his father, Jimmy Quinn before him. He was known and loved, far and wide, for managing local football teams, to his famous palm reading sessions, to helping so many people in distress.”
Mr Quinn’s remains will be brought to his family home at Meenagorey on Tuesday to repose overnight. His funeral will take place from there on Wednesday at 10am to St Mary’s Church, Cockhill (Buncrana) for Requiem Mass (11am). His remains will be brought to Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan for cremation on Wednesday.
