A woman has appeared in court charged with causing the death of an east Belfast pensioner by careless driving.

Appearing at Newtownards Magistrates Court by videolink, 49-year-old Emma-Clare Louise Dunnett was charged with causing the death of Beryl Carson by driving carelessly on the Portaferry Road in Kircubbin on August 27 2020.

Dunnett, from the Wisborough Road in south Croyden, was also charged with causing grievous bodily injury to a male victim on the same date.

None of the facts of the case were opened on Friday but it was reported at the time how Ms Carson, who was from the Inverary area of east Belfast, was taken to hospital after the crash but died as a result of her injuries.

A black Citroen C3 and a silver Lexus were involved in the collision. Ms Carson, who was the front seat passenger of the Citroen was taken to hospital but died as a result of her injuries.

In court on Friday, a prosecuting lawyer submitted there was a Prima Facie case against Dunnett which was conceded by defence counsel Conor Holmes.

While District Judge Amanda Brady returned the case to Downpatrick Crown Court for trial, she did not set a date for the arraignment.
