A firework posted through a letterbox in west Belfast while an elderly resident slept could have had “catastrophic” consequences, police have warned.

Reported at around 9.35pm on Tuesday night, the PSNI said young people pushed the lit firework through the letterbox at a property in the Glasvey Court area of Twinbrook before running off.

A police spokesperson said: “Thankfully, the firework did not fully ignite, but it did cause damage.

“If this firework had exploded, the end result could have been catastrophic. As such, we are investigating this serious criminal act as attempted arson with intent to endanger life.”

With Halloween traditionally seeing an increase in calls to the emergency services, the spokesperson added that fireworks could have “devastating and even fatal consequences”.

“Last night’s unacceptable act was extremely traumatic for the vulnerable victim,” they said.

“We are increasing police patrols in the area to deter anti-social behaviour across this Halloween period, but I would ask local parents and guardians – do you know where your children are and who they are with?

“We are encouraging parents to speak to their young people about firework safety, and the consequences of their actions should they participate in illegal acts.

“They could end up with a criminal record which may impact their future employment and travel prospects.”

It follows another incident on Monday in south Belfast, where a woman in her 30s suffered burns and swelling to her face after being hit by a firework that was aimed at police.

The PSNI said the woman in her 30s was injured by the firework that was aimed at police.

One person has been arrested in relation to the attack.

Anyone with relevant information on Tuesday night’s attack, or noticed any suspicious behaviour in the area between 9.30pm and 9.45pm, have been asked to call 101 – quoting reference 1760 of October 24.

Information can also be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
