DONEGAL GAA club Kilcar has paid a "drive by" tribute to the latest member of a unique group of centenarians in the village.

With 17 people reaching the milestone of 100 years in the last 26 years, the Gaeltacht village is believed to have had more centenarians per head of population than anywhere else in Ireland.

Famed for its GAA, Kilcar is home to the McHugh GAA dynasty, including former All-Ireland winners Martin McHugh, his brother, James, son, Mark and Donegal county playing son, Ryan.

Kilcar also hosts the holiday home of Hollywood golden couple, Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick.

While the village always came together to celebrate a new member of the Kilcar 100 club, it was unable to do so for the latest centenarian, Nora Shovlin because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However residents of the village were determined that the lockdown wasn’t going to let the important milestone go un-marked.

As she celebrated with family at her home at Bavin Nora was treated to a drive-by tribute by members of Kilcar GAC.

Bedecked in the club’s blue and gold colours, a convoy drove past her home while, observing social distancing, neighbours – including Martin McHugh - applauded.

Born Nora McBrearty on April 9 1920, the Donegal woman has spent her entire life in Bavin, marrying Peter Shovlin from the same village in October 1945.

A life-long teetotaller and non-smoker, Nora put her longevity down to her healthy lifestyle and love of the outdoors.

A spokesman for Kilcar GAC said everyone in the club wanted to pass on their good wishes despite the coronavirus lockdown.

“So we organised a special happy birthday surprise for her and all at a safe distance,” the spokesman said.
