THE older brother of Boyzone star Ronan Keating has died following a road crash in Co Mayo.

Ciaran Keating, who was in his 50s, was killed in the two-vehicle collision on Saturday afternoon on the N5 at Ballymiles, near Swinford.

It is understood Mr Keating was travelling with his wife to watch their son, Ruairi Keating, play in a match with his team Cork City in Co Sligo.

His wife, Ann Marie, and a passenger in the other vehicle suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

A Gardaí spokesperson said the crash happened at around 3.35pm.

Mr Keating suffered "fatal injuries" in the collision, while the driver of the second vehicle was taken to Mayo University Hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

The spokesperson added on Saturday: "A technical examination of the scene was conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators this evening and the road has since re-opened.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

In a statement posted to social media on Sunday, a spokesperson for Cork FC said members of the club "are deeply saddened at the passing of Ciaran Keating, father of our player Ruairí Keating".

"We extend our deepest sympathies to Ruairí and the entire Keating family at this exceptionally difficult time. May he rest in peace," they said.

"We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in due course."

Ciaran Keating was one of Ronan's four older siblings, and lived with his wife in Westport, Co Mayo.

Independent Mayo councillor Christy Hyland said Saturday's tragedy was "truly shocking", adding: "Our sympathy goes out to all the Keating family."

The tragedy follows 27-year-old Ruiri Keating signing a new three-year deal to play with Cork City following speculation he had been planning a move to fellow League of Ireland Premier Division team Derry City.
