David Lammy has warned against the destabilising impact of conflict in the Middle East on a visit to Qatar alongside Defence Secretary John Healey.
The Foreign Secretary and his Cabinet colleague have made a joint visit to the Gulf to call for de-escalation of the fighting, and to press for an end to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
Their arrival in Qatar comes after Hamas’ political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike on Iranian capital Tehran, which the militant group blames on Israel.
The Israelis have meanwhile claimed responsibility for a strike on a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, targeting the Hezbollah commander allegedly behind the deaths of 12 children and teenagers in a rocket attack on the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights over the weekend.
Some fear the clashes could prove to be a flashpoint which widens the conflict, with UK ministers having previously urged the opposing parties to keep cool heads.
The UK hopes to quell tensions alongside Qatar and other allies.
The UK and Qatar share a commitment to regional stability, security, defence and driving growth.

“Escalation and destabilisation are in no-one’s interests,” Foreign Secretary Mr Lammy said during the visit.
He added: “It is absolutely vital that we engage closely with partners like Qatar, who play a key role in mediating the conflict in Gaza, so that we can bring this devastating war to an end.
“The UK and Qatar have a long-standing and close partnership, and we will also look to build lasting stability and security in the region, and advance our shared priorities, like deepening economic ties, to drive UK growth and seize the opportunities of the clean energy transition.”
Mr Healey meanwhile said de-escalation of the fighting must be the “primary focus” of the UK and its allies.
The Defence Secretary added: “All sides must step back from conflict and step up diplomacy. We will work with important partners like Qatar as our Government leads a renewed push for peace.”
During their visit, the two senior Cabinet ministers will meet British troops based in the region, as well as the Emir of Qatar and his ministers.
