Wayne Boyd has labelled the opportunity to pair up with former champion Tony Wells in this season’s new-look Michelin Le Mans Cup with Nielsen Racing as “super exciting”.

Boyd and Wells are going to share a seat in the six-round track-based competition which gets underway in mid-April at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya.

Their car is one of 25 confirmed LMP3 starters for 2024, with the remainder of the capacity grid made up of 17 faster LMP2 machines.

Although this is the first time the duo has worked together, they are both familiar faces within the Michelin Le Mans Cup paddock, with Wells sealing the title as recently as three years ago.

Boyd moves over to Nielsen Racing having spent a decorated spell with United Autosports – a change brought about by his former employer’s decision to scale back its LMP3 programme.

“I have raced against Nielsen in the European Le Mans Series and also the Michelin Le Mans Cup over the past few seasons, and I know they always put out a very quick car,” was Boyd’s assessment.

“They are an incredibly professional team and one that is run by a great bunch of people who I have got to know having shared the paddock with them for years, so to get the chance to work with them is going to be exciting.

”Following their visit to Circuit de Catalunya, teams in the Michelin Le Mans Cup will prepare for consecutive trips to France with Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium is up next before the famous Mugello circuit in northern Italy and Portimão in Portugal bring the curtain down on the campaign.

“I have to say that I am super excited to be joining Nielsen Racing for the Michelin Le Mans Cup in 2024 with Tony Wells, who I know is a really fast and capable driver,” continued Boyd.

“I think we have a super strong chance of fighting for the LMP3 championship – that is definitely our aim with the line-up that we have,” continued Boyd. “I believe we have a great opportunity to win the title.

”Asked if he is currently working on an expanded programme for 2024, Boyd added: “At the moment this is my full-time programme for 2024 but I am looking at a couple of different other options.

“For now, though, I am waiting to see how things play out in the Michelin Le Mans Cup, but I am really happy with what I have already.”
