An American Airlines flight from Newark Airport to Dallas had to be diverted to Pittsburgh after an alleged bomb threat was discovered on a bathroom door onboard.

The American Airlines flight AA 1603 departed Newark Airport in New Jersey at 8:06am on Wednesday morning and was due to fly to Dallas Fort Worth, Texas.

According to the FBI, a flight attendant “noticed faint pink writing in the plane’s bathroom that mentioned a bomb on board” sometime after departure.

In a statement to WP11, the FBI said: “The pilot was notified and the plane safely diverted and was immediately met by FBI Pittsburgh agents, local law enforcement, and K-9s.”

“The plane was completely swept and no threat was found.”

“At this time, there is no indication of when the note was written,” they added.

Following the sweep of the plane, the flight was cleared to continue on to Dallas, where it landed safely after 4:30pm.

A similar bomb scare was noted on a United Airlines flight in February this year when a note in a bathroom was found on a flight from Newark to Los Angeles.

The flight was diverted to Chicago after a note was allegedly written on the restroom mirror stating the plane would blow up, according to CBS.

On that occasion, CBS reported that a passenger had been questioned after a sniffer dog connected a scent from the threatening note to a bag which had been checked in.
