tHe British Legion is determined to 'fight to a finish' the case of the disabled Omagh ex-serviceman whose application for the post of Workhouse Master at enniskillen was turned down on a Unionist vote of 18 to 7 Nationalists. this week the Ministry of Home Affairs wrote to the Board urging the appointment of one of the candidates put forward for the position, but the enniskillen Board of Guardians again refused to fill the post. two weeks ago the only ex-serviceman of the three candidates, Mr Gerard Cassidy, was rejected and it was decided to advertise anew.
When the matter came up for discussion this week it was decided on the Unionist majority vote to adjourn the question for another two weeks. Meantime the British Legion is working strenuously on behalf of Mr Cassidy's application.
A prominent official of the Legion told an Irish News reporter yesterday: "It must be understood that the Legion is non-sectarian and non-party. Our policy is to give every help we can to an ex-serviceman of good character and our eighty two branches all over the six Counties are behind us in this matter." Legion branches all over the North are showing the keenest interest in Cassidy's case which is regarded as a test case. they have formed a deputation of four, led by Colonel H s Richardson, to approach the Guardians. Major Dickie, RM wrote recommending the ex-serviceman's appointment.
