Ardoyne and Shankill pupils provide future hope

At a time of major political upheaval and confrontation, it is heartening to see youngsters from different traditions extending the hand of friendship to each other.

A shared project between Edenderry and Holy Cross nursery schools, in the Shankill and Ardoyne districts of Belfast respectively, has won third place overall against global competition at the Intercultural Innovation Awards at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

As we reported yesterday, the Buddy Up scheme, organised by the Community Relations in Schools group, encourages pupils and parents to develop links through learning together.

The international recognition received by the initiative demonstrates that, even in a divided society, children are capable of giving a strongly positive example to adults.
