Concerns growing over bonfire on Belfast's Milltown Road

It is alarming that, more than two months before the July 12 loyalist celebrations, serious issues have already arisen over attempts to build an illegal bonfire beside one of Belfast's main arterial routes.

Department for Infrastructure staff had a clear responsibility to inspect the Milltown Road site, close to Shaw's Bridge, over a range of health and safety concerns, including fly-tipping.

The blatant acts of intimidation which forced the officials to leave the area, as we reported yesterday, were entirely unacceptable and should be fully investigated by police.

Political parties and community representatives need to send out a message that the rule of law and order will be respected in all sections of the community.
