Shocking desecration at St Michan's

St Michan's Church, which dates back to 1095, is one of Dublin’s most historic buildings and its crypts, with their famous mummies, have always been a major visitor attraction.

Unfortunately, its city centre location, close to Arran Quay, has left it vulnerable to vandals and the desecrations which took place during the latest intrusion are among the most shocking to date.

An 800-year-old Crusader was decapitated, with his head actually stolen, and there are fears that some of the other ancient remains which were disturbed will completely disintegrate as a result.

A comprehensive Garda response is required and it is essential that every possible effort is made to secure the vaults and preserve the entire site for future generations.
