The episode in which a 13-year-old boy of mixed race was told to leave a Curry’s PC World store in Co Down while attempting to buy a wireless keyboard was unacceptable in every way.
No reason was given to the youth for his treatment, and his mother, who had been waiting outside in her car, also reported that she did not get a satisfactory response to her immediate complaints.
The teenager was entitled to believe that he was singled out because of his race, and it is appropriate that he received a settlement of £3,000 after bringing a discrimination case with the support of the Equality Commission.
While the operators of the business did not admit liability, it must be hoped that all the relevant lessons have been firmly taken on board.
