ON THIS DAY
The Shell Trophy cricket match between Wellington and Canterbury at Christchurch produced one of the most bizarre finishes in the game's history. To force a result, Wellington's Bert Vance delivered 17 no-balls in the penultimate over. The umpire miscounted the number of legitimate balls, producing a 22-ball over in which 77 runs were scored, 69 of them by wicketkeeper Lee Germon. A further 17 were scored off the last over, and Canterbury faced the last ball needing one run for victory. The batsman played a defensive stroke, unaware only one was needed, and the match was drawn. Wellington still went on to win the trophy.
Reports emerged that the Premier League Commission had found Arsenal manager George Graham guilty of taking a 'bung' - a cut of the £285,000 transfer of John Jensen. Graham was sacked as Gunners boss the following day and handed a worldwide ban.
Gillingham, playing in the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history, were thrashed 5-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Former England defender Ray Wilson announced he was selling his 1966 World Cup winner's medal.
Down came close to causing a huge shock in Division 1B as they lost 3-17 to 2-12 to Tipperary at Semple Stadium. While the scoreline suggests a comfortable home win, it was anything but as Down led by a point heading into injury time thanks to two Eoin Clarke goals, but three injury-time goals from Tipperary swung the game back in the home side's favour.
The Premier League confirmed the application by Liverpool to register Javier Mascherano as a player had been accepted. The Argentinian midfielder had been at the centre of controversy over the terms of his move to West Ham, along with countryman Carlos Tevez, at the start of the season.
Amy Williams won gold for Great Britain in the women's skeleton at the Winter Olympics.
Andy Mallon was Armagh's hero as he kicked an injury-time point to give Armagh a 1-11 to 0-13 Division One win over Monaghan at the Athletic Grounds. Monaghan had led late on before a Brian Mallon goal put the Orchard county ahead. Conor McManus responded with a point but Andy Mallon scored the winner. It would prove to be the point that saved Armagh and condemned Monaghan. Both teams finished the campaign on four points, but Monaghan were relegated on the head-to-head rule.
Dereck Chisora apologised for his conduct before and after his fight against Vitali Klitschko in Munich, which included a post-fight brawl with fellow British heavyweight David Haye. Chisora later had his licence withdrawn at a British Boxing Board of Control hearing.
Manchester United announced chief executive David Gill was to stand down at the end of the season.
