1981: Surrey batsman Ken Barrington, who was capped 82 times and scored 6,806 runs at international level, collapsed and died of a heart attack while touring as assistant manager of the England team in the West Indies.

1996: Imperial Call, ridden by Conor O'Dwyer, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup for Ireland in a year when 10 horses died at the festival.

2000: Former Liverpool, Rangers and Southampton manager Graeme Souness became the new boss of Blackburn, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract.

2004: Steve Harmison took seven wickets for 12 runs at Sabina Park as England bowled out West Indies for 47 on their way to a 10-wicket victory in the first Test of their series.

2007: UEFA suspended Valencia's David Navarro for seven months for his role in the on-pitch brawl that marred a Champions League game against Inter Milan.

2008: Denman, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by Sam Thomas, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

2010: David Beckham tore his Achilles while playing for AC Milan, ending his hopes of playing in the World Cup.

2011: Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel committed his future to Red Bull by signing a new contract until the end of 2014.

2012: Chelsea overturned a 3-1 first-leg deficit with a 4-1 home win over Napoli to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. Branislav Ivanovic's extra-time goal sealed a 5-4 aggregate win as the eventual European champions just scraped through.

2012: Dean Richards was appointed Newcastle's director of rugby for the start of the 2012-13 season. Richards could not take over before August due to his 'Bloodgate' suspension.

2013: Solwhit, trained by Charles Byrnes and ridden by Paul Carberry, won the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

2014: Lord Windermere, a 20/1 outsider trained by Jim Culloty and ridden by Davy Russell, won the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

2015: Wales ended Ireland's Grand Slam hopes with a 23-16 win in their Six Nations match at the Millennium Stadium, while England beat Scotland 25-13 at Twickenham.
