1976: Derby became the first British club to score 12 goals in a European match when they beat Ireland's Finn Harps 12-0 in a UEFA Cup tie. .

1984: Lester Piggott broke Frank Buckle's record of 27 Classic wins when he rode Commanche Run to victory in the St Leger.

1985: Tony Jacklin's European team inflicted defeat on the Americans in the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years at The Belfry.

1991: Down outgunned Meath in a classic All-Ireland GAA Senior Football Championship final played out in front of 64,500 fans at Croke Park, Dublin. Down, managed by Pete McGrath, lifted the Sam Maguire trophy after a thrilling 1-16 to 1-14 triumph.

2015: Manchester United defender Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture of the right leg in a 2-1 Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven.

2015: England selected the uncapped duo of Alex Hales and Zafar Ansari for the Test tour against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. Surrey all-rounder Ansari suffered an open dislocation of the left thumb hours after being called up.
