1926: Baseball great Babe Ruth hit three home runs for the New York Yankees in a World Series game.
1959: A record 92,706 fans watched the fifth game of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
1969: Golfing great Walter Hagen, one of America's most flamboyant players, died aged 76.
1985: Nigel Mansell, driving a Williams, took his first Formula One Grand Prix win in the European round at Brands Hatch.
1997: Barry Town's Garry Lloyd became the first non-league player to be selected for the full Wales international squad when he was called up for the World Cup qualifier against Belgium.
2001: Captain David Beckham scored a last-minute free-kick to secure a 2-2 draw against Greece at Old Trafford and book England's place in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
2005: Former Wales and British and Irish Lions hooker Jeff Young died at the age of 62 following a long illness.
