On This Day - October 15 2011: Burren made it back-to-back Down SFC titles with a 2-14 to 2-3 defeat of Clonduff

1887: Preston beat Hyde United 26-0 in a first round FA Cup tie to set an English goalscoring record.

1968: David Hemery won the Olympic 400 metres hurdles title in Mexico City.

2002: Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane was fined a record £150,000 and banned for five weeks by the Football Association over comments in his autobiography referring to a controversial tackle on Alf- Inge Haaland.

2003: Sammy McIlroy resigned as Northern Ireland manager.

2004: Andy Robinson was appointed full time head coach of the England rugby union team.

2010: New England Sports Ventures - now known as Fenway Sports Group - announced it had completed its takeover of Liverpool.

2011: The Football Association announced it would investigate after referee Andre Marriner "was made aware of an allegation" that Patrice Evra was racially abused by Luis Suarez in the day's 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield. Suarez was eventually given an eight-match ban and £40,000 fine.

2012: Cricket South Africa accepted an apology from England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier over comments he made regarding the involvement of South African players in the Kevin Pietersen text row.

2013: England beat Poland 2-0 at Wembley through goals from Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

2014: Australia rugby league star Jarryd Hayne surprisingly quit the sport to pursue a career in American football. He has since returned to play in the NRL.

2016: Tony Bellew retained his WBC world cruiserweight title in emphatic style with a third round stoppage of BJ Flores and then jumped out of the ring to challenge David Haye, who was in attendance at ringside.
