ON THIS DAY 

1899: French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen, the first non-English-speaking winner of the Wimbledon women's singles title, was born. She won the first of her six Wimbledon singles titles in 1919.

The loose, short-length dress she wore revolutionised fashion in the women's game.

Five of her titles were won in consecutive years, 1919-23. She died in 1938.

2000: England midfielder Steve McManaman scored a second-half volley to help Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 in the Champions League final.

2001: Former England boss Kevin Keegan took charge at Manchester City.

2003: James Anderson claimed a debut five-wicket haul as Zimbabwe lost 19 wickets in a day to lose the first Test against England at Lord's by an innings and 92 runs.

2008: Chelsea announced manager Avram Grant's contract had been terminated.

2013: Tottenham player Andros Townsend was charged with allegedly breaching betting regulations by the Football Association and withdrew himself from England's squad for the European Under-21 Championship.

2014: Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time in Lisbon to lift their 10th European Cup.

2018: Head coach Mauricio Pochettino committed himself to Tottenham by signing a new five-year contract.
