BACK IN THE DAY

January 10 2010: All-Ireland Club Senior Hurling Championship semi-final: Dunloy v Portumna

Dunloy co-manager Shane Elliott has said he will exercise caution with Paul Shiels despite the talismanic Cuchullain's man's eagerness to play in next month's All-Ireland Club Senior Hurling Championship semi-final against Portumna.

Shiels missed most of 2009 for club and county with a groin injury, but has returned to training since Dunloy's Ulster final win over Ballycran in October.

Shiels's involvement in the February 14 semi-final against the three-in-a-row chasing All-Ireland champions would be a huge boost to Dunloy's chances, but Elliott says that the Antrim man's long-term fitness will not be risked.

Elliott said. “We wouldn't want to put all our eggs in one basket as far as Paul's concerned and rush him too much.”

Damien McMullan is Dunloy's only other injury concern. He had surgery on a leg problem before Christmas and his recovery will be assessed over the coming weeks. The Ulster champions haven't escaped the disruption brought about by the cold weather.

However, they have had the use of Derry club Lavey's 3G indoor pitch for training and have been able to concentrate on stick work, which Elliott described as “a godsend”.
