Derry City's Cameron McJannet has backed his former captain Eoin Toal to be a success at Bolton Wanderers.

Toal, who played over 150 games for Derry over six seasons, completed his switch to Wanderers, in a deal which could earn the Brandywell men a six-figure sum, should add-ons be triggered.

McJannet feels the big Armagh man, who signed a three-year deal with the League One club, has all the attributes to do well in England.

"It's going to be a massive loss for us, because as everyone knows he's a great, great player, but he deserves his chance," conceded McJannet.

"Eoin was a big character in the changing room and while it's going to be a loss for us, we just have to carry on and do our best.

"Eoin has got his great move and nothing but congratulations to him on, but for us we have to carry on and do our best without him."

The centre-back, who played his part in Derry's deserved stoppage time win at Finn Harps last Sunday, is claiming an assist for James Akintunde's late winner.

"To be fair just before (Will) Patching hit the free-kick I said to Akie 'go back post', so I'm taking a little bit of credit for our winner," he joked.

"It was a massive win for us, which keeps our momentum going, as that now makes it three league wins on the bounce.

"Our second half performance was night and day from our first half display, so we knew if we scored one then we would keep the pressure on and possibly get another goal and that's what we did.

"We came to Finn Harps to win and we told ourselves that we weren't going to be settling for a draw, so we were delighted to get the winner."

Now with Toal departed boss Ruaidhri Higgins will have to select a new player to take over the armband and while McJannet wouldn't be drawn on the subject, he did concede that Sunday's stand-in skipper Patrick McEleney produced a captain's like performance.

"Patrick leads with the ball and without the ball," stated the Milton Keynes' native.

"He's an amazing player and to be honest he drove us on at Finn Harps.

"He was the main man, he was driving us all on and in terms of taking the game by the scruff of the neck, 'Fats' drove us from the middle of the pitch and got us the win."
