HATS off to North Belfast Harriers for organising an event with a difference last weekend.

The Stags hosted an afternoon of 5,000m track races at Boys’ Model that attracted a turnout of 80 runners. The Afternoon of 5Ks comprised six 5,000m races, where the emphasis was placed on breaking personal bests rather than competitive racing. Races were graded on estimated finish times to give the participants the opportunity to challenge their personal best for the distance.

By grouping runners with similar finish times and placing dedicated pacers in every race, the organisers created a great atmosphere for spectators, who were allowed into lane three as they cheered every single runner across the finish line. Acorns athlete Darrell McKee (16:22) won the top race, while the fastest woman was Leanne Gibson (19:45) from the Orangegrove club.

"There was ferocious appetite for an event like this. We were overwhelmed by the response we had gotten and from the great feedback we have subsequently received,” said NBH official John Black.

“I have no doubt we will put it on again. Our aspirations would be to create an event similar to the Highgate Harriers event, with music playing around the track, announcers calling out runners' names and generally create a real fun atmosphere for both the runner and the spectators.

“For many of those taking part, this was their first foray into track running, which often struggles to attract numbers. The hope is that this kind of event format will help open the door of track running to others and give club runners more opportunities to sharpen themselves outside of championship races.”

The event was organised and delivered within three weeks. It seems the idea was conjured up on a long Sunday run but exceeded all expectations in terms of participation.

Online entry had to be closed well before the event and entries on the day were refused despite two further races being added to the programme. The club hope to add electronic timing when the event is organised again.
