ANTRIM team-mates will be among those who go toe-to-toe for a good cause on Saturday night when the Clash of the Saffrons takes place at Belfast’s Devenish Complex.
The meeting of county men Sean McVeigh and Marty Johnston tops the bill at the white collar boxing event, but that is just one of eight bouts on the night. Former world champion boxer Brian Magee - the Antrim senior footballers’ strength and conditioning trainer - is helping prepare the fighters, while BBC Sport presenter Mark Sidebottom is compere.
Johnston’s brother Ricky will also be donning the gloves when he takes on Lámh Dhearg’s Gerard Walls, with Glenavy’s Paddy Gallagher up against personal trainer Pearse McInerney. Other bouts include Declan Lynch (Lámh Dhearg) v Ronan Hanna (St John’s, Aldergrove), Mark McIlvenny (Lámh Dhearg) v Jarlath Birt (Bellaghy), Ciaran Loney (Glenavy) v Gerard McCorley (Cargin) and Dermot Niblock (St Gall’s) v Stephen Tully (Lámh Dhearg). A special feature will be the meeting of the two men in black, when referees Fintan McCotter (Sarsfield’s) and Ciaran McDonald (St Gall’s) step between the ropes.
Proceeds go towards the Antrim senior footballers’ training fund, while a contribution will also be made to Action for Children. Tickets cost £10, with doors opening at 6.30pm.
