Derry City's Nathan Boyle believes the Candystripes are slowly returning to their old selves.

City haven't won since captain Ryan McBride's sudden death last month and suffered four defeats on the bounce before stopping the rot with a draw at Sligo Rovers on Saturday night.

And Boyle is delighted to quickly to have the chance to build on that performance this evening when Limerick make the trip to Buncrana tonight.

"It’s great that we have a game and it is exactly what we want," said the striker.

"We have Limerick and then St Pat's on Friday. We can’t wait and we’re ready to go.

"We’re getting players back and fighting for places again. If we keep it tight at the back so we can’t wait for Limerick now.”

Boyle also concedes that City need to get back to making their temporary home at Maginn Park a fortress again.

At the start of the season they defeated champions Dundalk and Drogheda United in Buncrana, but in their last two home games they suffered defeats to Bray Wanderers and neighbours Finn Harps.

"We didn’t play well against Harps," said Boyle.

"We didn’t give the fans any reason to shout for us at all – even to give us a lift – and that was the most disappointing thing.

"Even if you don’t play well there should be a bit of fight but thankfully we had that back against Sligo and we’ll take it into Tuesday.”

The 23-year-old, who has netted three times this season, felt Kenny Shiels's men could have won at the Showgrounds at the weekend.

“We are getting back to ourselves. There’s no excuse for why we shouldn’t," he said.

"We lost four on the bounce and our performance in Sligo was by far the best yet.

"We had a lot of chances tonight, both half-chances and great chances that we should have scored, but there’s no point in saying ‘should have’ now."

Shiels looks set to be without midfielder Aaron McEneff this evening, but Barry McNamee is likely to be pushing for a place in the starting line-up after getting 30 minutes against Sligo.
