Derry City boss Ruaidhrí Higgins backs his players to return to winnings ways after the mid-season break.

Higgins watched his side end their recent run of defeats, after they narrowly secured a point in the northwest derby against Finn Harps, on Friday night.

City had captain Eoin Toal to thank to rescue them a share of the spoils against Ollie Horgan’s men, who in truth should have claimed the victory.

The Donegal men took an early lead thanks to Filip Mihaljevic's goal before Will Patching's stunning free-kick levelled things, but the Ballybofey side thought they had won the game after Eric McWoods gave them the lead for a second time but Toal's late header, earned the Brandywell men a point.

Nevertheless Higgins feels his squad is good enough to put a winning run together once the Premier Division restarts in June.

Incidentally, City's first game back after the restart, which was due to take place at Shelbourne, on June 10, has been postponed due to goalkeeper Brian Maher being called up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad.

"We've had a really, really good start and a poor month but can we go on a five or six game winning run? We can," Higgins said.

"We've got the players to do that. Hopefully we can get the injured players back and there's no doubt we can put a run together and start putting points on the board again.

"We probably need to add a couple in the summer to help us and obviously try and get our injured players back as soon as possible. There's a lot to look forward to and we will bounce back and come again,"

"There's a lot of work to be done and a lot of thinking about how we're going to attack the second half of the season, but there's also a lot to be positive about.

"We have European football, we're third in the league and, yes, we were first up until a few weeks ago but we're still in a position that we can effect the top end of the table.

"To be honest we have been using the same 12/13 players, Friday/Monday, Friday/Monday for a long time now and they need a break and they need to get away and comeback refreshed and ready to go again and I have no doubt that we'll get better from here now in."

The Limavady man feels that his youthful team have the answers and the players to unlock teams in close games.

"We're going to be faced with different tasks every week and it's up to us," he added.

"The players need a break and we need to get back to doing what we do best. I've no doubt the group will be galvanised.

"As I said we have European football to look forward to, the FAI Cup, we would like to have more points on the board but it's not a disaster by any stretch. We will be positive because we have a lot of good players here."
