AFL club Hawthorn has confirmed the long-expected signing of Derry minor football captain Conor Glass.
The 18-year-old Glen man has won three Derry and Ulster club minor titles with the Watty Graham team, as well as two MacRory Cups and a Hogan Cup with St Patrick's, Maghera.
He also guided Derry to an Ulster title earlier this year and has been on the Hawks’ radar since he first began to star as a 16-year-old.
The move to register him as an International B rookie was confirmed by the club overnight and, having already made three trips to the Melbourne-based club, Glass says he can’t wait to get started.
“The kicking’s come fine, and all the attributes like the running and the tackling, but it’s just more the style of the football,” he said.
“It’s getting used to the type of the play and the stoppages. Gaelic’s more free flowing, but AFL’s more stop-start, with clearances and stuff like that so that’s probably the most different bit about it.”
He is currently still studying at St Patrick’s Maghera, where he will finish his upper 6th year next June before moving to Australia.
