THE Irish News understands that both Ballyholland Harps and RGU Downpatrick have been hit with heavy sanctions as a result of the fracas which marred their recent league encounter.
Although no confirmation was forthcoming from either club or the Down County Board last night, it is understood that both clubs have been excluded from next year’s Down Senior Football Championship, have had fines imposed and have had a number of their players banned for lengthy periods.
It is further understood that all adult teams have been banned, which includes the reserves.
The game – which was played on Sunday, October 7 – was a rearranged fixture. The first game had to be abandoned after an altercation took place which resulted in an injury to a player.
The ugly scenes at the game, which were widely circulated on social media, erupted when two supporters became involved in a confrontation behind one of the goals in Kilcoo where the match was played.

This led to a number of players leaving the field of play to become involved in the brawl, which continued for some
time.
The unsavoury affair was one of several nasty confrontations at GAA matches in recent weeks and which have, once again, prompted calls for GAA authorities to come down hard on those involved.
However, the extent of the punishment meted out is likely to have come as a shock to both clubs, and it would seem certain that they will launch appeals.
Just last weekend Ballyholland Harps claimed the Down minor football championship title for the first time in 27 years following a very impressive defeat of Burren.
To be denied entry to the senior championship next year, in particular, is sure to be a bitter pill to swallow for both clubs.
