Laochra Loch Lao GAA club will undertake a 350km running challenge from tomorrow until Monday, June 1 - the same distance between Spórtlann na hÉireann, on Belfast’s Falls Road and Spórtlann Naomh Anna, Leitir Mór in Galway.
Belfast’s Irish-speaking club, Laochra Loch Lao were looking forward to returning to the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta this year, the football competition between Gaeltacht and Irish language football clubs which has been a central part of the GAA summer for over 50 years.
This weekend would have brought Laochra Loch Lao's first visit to Naomh Anna GAA club in Leitir Mór – however, due to Covid-19 Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta will not be taking place this year.
As a result, Laochra Loch Lao's ladies' team decided to organise the fundraiser for the same weekend.
Laochra Loch Lao players will be running over the course of the weekend in order to reach a total distance of 350km as a club. Each member will be running or walking a certain amount of kilometres every day to reach that target.
The money raised through the GoFundMe page will go towards the Whiterock Children's Centre, a group which plays an integral role in the community, supporting and assisting families and children. They are especially busy supporting those most vulnerable at the moment, given the present circumstances.
Other club members and members of the public are welcome to also take part in the running challenge between May 29 and June 1. Donations can be made through the following GoFundMe link: www.gofundme.com/f/dushlan-reathaiochta-laochra-loch-lao
