Tyrone GAA postpone upcoming Cookstown underage fixtures

TYRONE GAA have postponed four upcoming underage games following a request from the Cookstown Fr Rock’s club.

The Cookstown club had released a statement earlier on Thursday expressing their disappointment with Tyrone GAA’s refusal to postpone the fixtures which were scheduled for this weekend.

A referee and umpire were stabbed at an U16 Championship semi-final match between Cookstown and Fintona two weeks ago.

Video footage and images circulated on social media that evening, showing a man being led away by police officers.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed one person was taken to hospital following an emergency call.

The Fr Rocks club state that they have just recently resumed full training following the “traumatic events” and have provided “the necessary support to all those who were impacted or affected” due to the incident.

Cookstown made a formal request to Tyrone GAA seeking postponement of the matches involving the club's U4, U16 and U18 teams, which was initially rejected.

But the Tyrone County Board has confirmed that Cookstown’s clashes with Omagh (U18), Errigal Ciaran and Carrickmore (both U16) and Trillick (U14) will be rescheduled for a later date.

“Our members continue to receive counselling and support from healthcare professionals and the professional advice is that our players are not in a position to take part in the games this weekend and we have now communicated this to Tyrone GAA,” read the Cookstown GAA statement.

“We await a new date for these games from Tyrone GAA and remain confident that Tyrone GAA will continue to support the club and especially our young players.

“The club wishes to thank everyone for their ongoing help and support.”
