Morgan Fuels Down SFC quarter-final: Glenn 1-12 Mayobridge 0-08

Glenn produced the shock of the championship to knock Mayobridge out and they were deserved winners.

Mayobridge were content to be only trailing by three points at half-time in a  game where Glenn seemed to be holding all the aces.

Glenn were relegated to Division Three of the All-County league a few weeks ago and were not given a lot of credit for reaching the quarter-finals of the senior championship via the traditional route.

However, Mayobridge, who have been a top four team in Down in recent seasons, took a while to find their rhythm in Kilcoo.

A brace of points from the impressive Joe Sands and a super long range shot from Denis Murtagh had Glenn three points to the good before county man Shane Annett replied for the Sky Blues.

The Bridge lost their shape as Glenn used the full length of the pitch. Murtagh's second point was even better than the first and Sands and Decky Carville stretched Glenn's lead. But Steve Poacher's side dug their way back into the game with Conaill Gallagher, Caolan Gallagher and young Adam Crimmins on target to leave the half-time score Glenn 0-7 Mayobridge 0-4.

Mayobridge thought they were through for a goal when Jamie McKay made a perfect pass for Aaron Magee, but Glenn's Patrick Brooks made a sensational intercept and he was the Artful Dodger with the amount of pickpocketing from the Sky Blues.

O'Hare and Jack McCartan traded points before Glenn hit the net on 40 minutes.  Mayobridge failed to deal with a long ball into the danger area and Decky Carville fired home from close range.

Two converted frees from Gallagher kept Mayobridge in touch but there was a huge roar when Glenn captain Jack McCartan stroked over to give his side a 1-09 to 0-7 lead with nine minutes left.

Glenn's Cian Lyons and Lee Quinn traded points as an upset looked on the cards.

Niall McParland, Shay Millar and Sands put in a stunning performance, while goalkeeper John O'Hare was outstanding - no coincidence they all wore the red and black this year.

Mayobridge were disappointing, they were out fought and nothing seemed to go their way.

The 'Bridge trailed by five points with three additional minutes left and they never looked like rescuing it. At the other end, Millar was through on goal but struck the post although Tiernan O'Brien tapped over to wrap up a memorable victory.
