MARK Downey admitted he was “gutted” after he finished 10th in the points race at cycling’s World Track Championship in Hong Kong yesterday.

The Dromore racer picked up six points but finished well behind the winner, Australia’s Cameron Mayer, the pre-race favourite, who topped the 40-man field with 76 points. Belgium’s Kenny De Ketele came in second on 40.

“Gutted,” said the county Down man.

“I found myself wanting it too much and trying to be too active at the start. Paid for my efforts when I needed the legs. I’ll be back.”

Downey rides the two-man Madison event tomorrow with Cycling Ireland team-mate Felix English.
