EDDIE Hearn said the scoring “made no sense” as boos rang out around Brooklyn’s Barclays Center following Sean McComb’s controversial split-decision loss to Arnold Barboza junior Jr as the co-main event to Ryan Garcia’s victory over Devin Haney on Saturday night.
Pete Taylor-trained McComb caused unbeaten Barboza headache after headache with his reach, constant movement and shot selection in the WBO Inter-Continental Super-Lightweight title contest.
By the midway point he appeared to be well ahead and continued to dictate the pace and distance but two of the judges scored the bout 96-94 and 97-93 for the home fighter while the other had it 98-92 to the Belfast man.
Barboza struggled with McComb’s southpaw style over the 10 rounds and took a lot of punishment as the ‘Public Nuisance’ settled into his box-fighter style.
Boos rang out around the arena as the result was announced and Matchroom boss Hearn said: “How on earth do you have a scorecard that is 98-92 for McComb and 97-93 for Barboza? It makes absolutely no sense at all. I thought McComb won.”
