The Candystripes have been wasteful lately in their League of Ireland fixtures but have got their final game in hand, against Sligo Rovers, as a lifeline.
Ruaidhrí Higgins’ side have not won a league game since August 23 against Waterford and has seen their rivals catch up with them, leaving them in a four-horse race going into the final stretch of the season.
The last game for the Derry City side ended in a 1-1 draw with Dublin side Bohemians, and before that only managed two points in four games.
Their opponents, Sligo Rovers, sit mid-table in the League of Ireland Premier Division and the Connacht side are in with an outside chance of qualifying for Europe if disaster strikes further up the table.
Rovers come into this game having drawn 0-0 with table-topping Shelbourne to stir the mixing pot of the Premier Division title race and will aim to thicken the plot even more.
