Dundee eased through to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup with a comfortable win over Airdrieonians at Dens.

The hosts completely dominated the first half, netting four times thanks to goals from Clark Robertson, Seun Adewumi and a Lyall Cameron double.

After the break, Airdrie managed to shut up shop but the damage had already been done for the Championship strugglers.

Dundee will also take comfort from the win and the clean sheet after being hit for six in successive league games against Hearts and Celtic.

The home side shuffled their pack following Wednesday’s thumping by the Hoops with no fewer than six changes, including Cameron coming back into the team for the first time since the announcement of his pre-contract with Rangers.

Airdrie made two alterations to the starting line-up that beat Queen’s Park last Saturday.

Before kick-off, there was a minute’s applause for former Dark Blues striker Billy Pirie who died recently.

Dundee took the lead in the 13th minute when Cameron delivered a corner from the left to Robertson who headed back across goal and past Airdrie keeper Kieran Wright.

The hosts’ tails were up and Scott Tiffoney tried his luck with a snap-shot but it flew straight to Wright who made a comfortable save.

It was Airdrie’s turn next with Adam Frizzell sending a well-hit long-range shot towards goal but home keeper Jon McCracken dived low to snuff out the danger.

Instead, it was the Dark Blues who increased their advantage in the 25th minute. Tiffoney intercepted a back pass from Dylan MacDonald and then teed up Cameron who made no mistake from 10 yards firing past Wright.

The Diamonds came close to pulling a goal back when the ball was worked to Dean McMaster but McCracken dived to his left to turn his curling strike for a corner.

However, it was Dundee who netted their third in the 40th minute. Antonio Portales came close with a header and then the defender quickly won the ball back with Tiffoney laying it on a plate for Adewumi who took a couple of touches before calmly slotting past Wright.

Airdrie shot themselves in the foot once more four minutes later when McMaster was caught in possession by Murray who squared the ball to Cameron for an easy tap-in.

Dundee were quickly into their stride after the break with Wright having to pull off a superb stop to keep out a close-range Murray strike.

The Diamonds then came agonisingly close to reducing the deficit in the 65th minute when Frizzell smashed a free-kick off the Dundee bar with the Airdrie skipper being denied by McCracken shortly after when he looked certain to score.

Dundee then hit the woodwork themselves when a Murray shot clipped the bar.
