ENGLAND in a major competition final is becoming less of a miracle and more of an expectation for English fans.

However, some fans will be wondering just how England have gotten to the point where they are 90 minutes away (or maybe 120 plus penalties) from being crowned the champions of Europe at the second time of asking.

Spain know this occasion all too well, being three-time winners of the tournament in the past and winning back-to-back Euros in 2008 and 2012, sandwiched between the World Cup in 2010.

England’s performance in these Euros have been far from impressive given their opponents, only managing a draw against Slovenia and Denmark despite boasting arguably the most talented squad in the tournament.

The knock-out stages proved to be more of the same for England after the three lions needed Jude Bellingham heroics and extra time to see off Slovakia and needed spot kicks to see off Switzerland and reach the final four.

England’s semi-final victory against the Netherlands was a complete turnaround from what they have been playing like, creating chances, playing positively and minimising mistakes.

The Dutch side, led by Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, were crushed by Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins who fired in across goal from a tight angle to send Southgate’s boys to Berlin in the dying embers of added time.

Spain have had more of an upward trajectory on their way to the European Championship final, being the only side to win all three of their group games and their knock-out scalps include heavy-hitters France and Germany, along with the tournament’s surprise package Georgia.
