Glentoran have hit a hot patch of form and forward Glen Fisher says the players don’t want it to end as they aim to secure a BetMcLean Cup semi-final spot.
The rescheduled quarter-final offers Glentoran a chance to build on their impressive form, with the east Belfast side now unbeaten in eight games ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to the Showgrounds to take on Ballymena.
They didn’t have it all their own way on Friday night, but eventually emerged with a 4-2 Irish Cup fifth round victory over neighbours H&W Welders. That results means they remain unbeaten in cup competition, having already secured a place in the Co Antrim Shield final.
“We’re on a good run right now, but Declan has made it clear that we need to keep pushing hard and not get complacent,” said Fisher
“The lads are fully focused on taking things one game at a time and this quarter-final tie is a massive step towards achieving some silverware this season.
“Everyone is pulling together and working hard for each other, and that’s exactly what you need to succeed in cup competitions.”
Tuesday’s clash marks the third meeting between the two sides this season, with each team having secured a victory. Ballymena United claimed a narrow 1-0 win at the Ballymena Showgrounds in the league back in September, while Glentoran responded by defeating the Braidmen in November to win the County Antrim Shield semi-final.
United will still be reeling from Saturday’s defeat to championship side Ards in the cup, but Fisher is taking nothing for granted against Jim Ervin’s men.
“We know Ballymena will be a tough test, especially at their place. They’re a strong side with quality across the pitch, so we’ll need to be at our very best to get the result,” said Fisher, who has six goals and three assists this season.
“It’s about staying focused, executing our game plan and bringing the same intensity and determination that have been key to our recent results.
“We’re on a fantastic run of form, and the belief in the squad is growing with every match. We’re determined to keep that momentum going and build on it as we continue to push forward this season.”
Glentoran could be boosted by the availability of their winter signings – Christie Pattisson, Shane McEleney, and Ciarán Coll. Adding intrigue, Shane McEleney could make his Glentoran debut against his brother Patrick McEleney, who also moved during the winter window, joining Ballymena United from Derry City.
