Lionel Messi grabbed Inter Miami’s first goal of their pre-season campaign with a penalty shootout win after a 2-2 draw against Mexican side Club America.

Messi equalised three minutes after Miami had gone behind in the first half of the friendly in Nevada.

Henry Martin had put the Mexicans ahead after 31 minutes, but the lead was short-lived as Messi combined with Luis Suarez to open his account for the new campaign.

Club America took the lead again seven minutes into the second half, defender Israel Reyes putting them ahead.

Messi was taken off just after the hour along with fellow veterans Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets as Miami rang the changes.

It looked as if they would open their pre-season outings with a loss but two minutes into stoppage time, Tomas Aviles got on the end of a chance created by Julian Gressel to grab an equaliser.

Seventeen-year-old Sani Morales rolled in the winning kick as Miami won the shootout 3-2, both teams having missed three of their first five attempts.

Inter Miami play four more friendlies, starting at Peruvian side Universitario on January 30, before their opening Concacaf Champions Cup match against Sporting Kansas City.
