David Livermore was pleased to collect a point at Coventry in what looks set to be his final game as Millwall caretaker boss.
The visitors had won just once away from The Den this season and were on a run of one win in eight games prior to the stalemate, but restricted Frank Lampard’s men to six shots with one on target.
“Real tough game for us, really pleased with a clean sheet and a point,” Livermore said.
“We had a tough game away at Norwich on Boxing Day (2-1 defeat), where we tried to get after the ball a little bit higher up the pitch and we got hurt a couple of times, so I thought it was important today that we made sure that we were a little bit more conservative with our press and I thought we nullified them, we made them play passes we wanted them to play.
“They had a really good chance in the second half when they hit the crossbar but other than that I can’t remember too many clear-cut chances for them.
“We would have liked to have carried a little bit more of an attacking threat than we did but there’s always a tipping point in a game where you decide whether you stick with your point or whether you go for it.”
Livermore said he has not spoken to Alex Neil, who is reportedly on the verge of taking over the managerial reins following the departure of Neil Harris earlier this month.
“I haven’t had a chance to meet him at the moment,” Livermore said. “I’m aware of what’s going on behind the scenes but we haven’t spoken yet. I’m sure when the club makes an announcement tomorrow that will happen. He had no input today.
“I’m probably as aware as you guys are, I don’t think it’s a secret but that’s all going on behind the scenes, it’s really out of my control, and not in my train of thought.”
Coventry boss Frank Lampard insisted he was not frustrated by his side’s performance after they managed just one shot on target despite enjoying over 75 per cent of possession.
“I don’t want to discredit them (Millwall), they are very good at what they do in terms of making it difficult to play against,” Lampard said. “They concede low goals and you can see why, and the game stops a lot.
“But I’m not frustrated with the performance. I’m frustrated with the result because I think we defended really well. That’s two clean sheets now so we have got to take those positives.
“People talk about it a lot and we all get excited when we win 4-0 in comfortable games and then when the games are challenging, set-pieces and things like that coming in, we defended that great.
“Then we had the big chance of the game, which we felt like we nearly scored. I certainly did, and then some other sort of decent chances.
“So yeah, frustrated with the result but it’s understanding of the opponent, and credit to them and we take the positives, we see the things we can improve and we move on. It was just one of those days.
“I think since I’ve been in, most games our XG or chance creation – against Plymouth, against West Brom, Hull on the whole has been big.
“So you have to have an understanding that not every game looks the same and sometimes you won’t have the opportunity to create if a team block space and defend well.”
