ARDS skipper Michael Ruddy feels the north Down men are on the up ahead of Friday night’s big Playr-Fit Championship clash against Newry City at the Showgrounds (7.45pm).

Ards stunned top flight Portadown when an Aidan Steele goal gave them a 1-0 win at Shamrock Park in the BetMcLean Cup in midweek, a result which followed on from a draw with Institute and 3-1 victory over table-topping H&W Welders.

Although still eight points off top spot, Ruddy said: “We have a bit of momentum and that will stand us in good stead for what is a quick turnaround.”

Barry Gray’s Newry, relegated from the top flight last season, have struggled in the second tier and desperately need to string a few results together to get into the promotion frame.

In Saturday’s action (3pm), the Welders - ahead of Bangor on goal difference at the summit - host joint third Limavady, while Lee Feeney’s men take on Institute at Clandeboye Park.

Armagh City - 3-2 winners at top flight Loughgall in the BetMcLean Cup - tackle Newington at Holm Park, Dundela - joint third with Limavady - go to Ballyclare Comrades and Annagh United welcome Ballinamallard.
